Calling

Awake

When someone has been lost in the wilderness and then is found, rescuers use a scale to assess how alert and oriented the person is.

Alert and oriented times four (A&OX4) means the person knows four things: who they are, where they are, what time it is, and what is happening. A&OX3 means the person knows who they are, where they are, and what time it is, but they’re unsure of the events that are taking place.  The scale decreases accordingly all the way down to A&OX0 which means the person is awake but they have no sense of self, place, or time.

Who am I? How did I get here?

These are questions dreamers ask when they wake up. When they wake up and realize they are not living the life God intended for them. When the seed of purpose that was planted inside of them at birth has become a pit in the bottom of their stomach.

Yesterday I met with a young friend who recently graduated from college. She’s wrestling with her calling – not because she’s unsure of what it is – but because of The Voices.

The Voices are telling her it’s a silly dream, impractical, that she’s capable of more. More what? Compliance? Conformity? Gah.

She’s walking the tightrope between rebellion and resignation.

You can’t blame them, The Voices. They are perpetuating the same hoax that was lade on them when they stopped watering the seed of Intelligent Design and now they are A&OX0.

But there’s hope! Because the seed never dies, although our dreams may lay dormant for a while.

Eventually we all wake up.
